LIFE ART DEATH DEATH ART LIFE

A durational performance piece, part installation and performance. An audience is invited to view the subject over a period of time while moving through the space.

The artist paints his body in fantastic colors as he lies upon the floor. Upon closer inspection, the viewer discovers the artist is using paint that is flowing forth like blood from a slit in his wrists.

The piece is a visual comment on the dual and cyclical nature of self-creation and self-destruction.

It was first presented at the University of Iowa in 1998.

The piece is also known as: "The Artist Kills Self to Create Self"
